David is a mexican photojournalist born in the summer of 1974, in the huge and colourful Mexico City, the political, economical and cultural centre of the country. During his childhood, David was enchanted by the music of Francisco Gabilondo Soler “Cri-Cri”, The Beatles, Cepillín, Bethoveen, Pablo Milanés, Silvio Rodríguez, Piero, The Rolling Stones and Oscar Chávez. He was also fascinated by the cinema of Charles Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, el Santo enmascarado de Plata, Cantinflas, Tin-Tán; and later on, by the cinema of Luis Buñuel, Wim Wenders, Giuseppe Tornatore, Roberto Gavaldón and Arturo Ripstein. His favorite tv shows were: Odisea Burbujas, Cachirulo´s tales, En familia con Chabelo and El Chavo del ocho. From a young age he developped a love for reading. Books like The Little Prince, Juan Salvador Gaviota, The Labyrinth of solitude, Buddah´s biography, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Philosophy of liberation, The Alchemist, Wuthering Heights, and mainly, The Bible, have left a deep mark on his mind, his heart and his world´s vision. Since 1987, in high school David developed a keen interest in visual arts. He decided he wanted a career as a political cartoonist and he began to publish his cartoons in the school´s magazine, Horizontes. Later on, he realized that his talent for drawing wasn´t enough. In university, he discovered photography and that became his new visual tool. He started his first projects in 1993, mostly attracted by the social photography. In 1997, he completed his bachelor´s degree in Science of Communication from the private University of Tepeyac, in Mexico City. David specializes in photography, audiovisual and radiophonic production. One of his short-films, “Senos de Plastilina”, won the 1996 “Golden Duck” prize as the best cinematographic film of the University of Tepeyac Festival. His film was later screened in the National Arts Centre of Mexico during the 2 nd Bi-annual Video Festival, in the category of experimental films. The same year, his documentary “Videografía de un Arte-ritual” won the 3 rd price of the inter-universitary television´s production festival. In 2000, he made the photography of the short-film “Sin dejar huella”, directed by Hugo Lopez, a film that won the “Black Face award” of the University of Communication in Mexico. Between 2001 and 2002, David collaborated as a photographer for the independent newspaper “Machetearte” in Mexico and for the political satire internet site “El Cadillo”. In 2004, David photographed in Guatemala and mainly in the surroundings of Antigua. In 2005, he photographed extensively in Canada. During 2005 and 2006 he traveled for a year in India where he photograhed mainly in north India, Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and in the province of Ladakh (Little Tibet) in the Himalayas. Since 2005, he has collaborated with the Ottawa based newspaper “Mundo en Español” as a photographer and writter. David is currently a freelance photographer and videographer. His imagery is the expression of his love for nature, for people and cultural diversity. Although art photography is an interest of his, David´s photography stands out mostly for its social character and humanism, where he seeks to portray the details of daily life in order to express the depth of the human spirit. |
